Witness the birth of the Piper Seneca. Although they wanted to see how a Dakota (235hp charokee) would work with fixed pitch props on three small engines first, they found it lacking. So they took the nose engine off, retracted the gear, gave it 6 seats and made the two engines bigger. Done.

Y e gods. The purpose of the second and third engines is to make up for the weight and extra fuel needed for engines 2 and 3..
